ABOUT MARFAMarfa, Texas is one of the most unique places in the United States. Located in the high desert of far West Texas, it's out of the way location is part of its charm. A majority Latino population is supplemented with an interesting mix of cowboys, artists, musicians, and writers. At its core it is a dusty little Texas town with a heart and soul as big as the wide open West Texas skies. Marfa was the film location for a number of American classics, such as "Giant", "No Country For Old Men" and "There Will Be Blood". It has become a mecca for lovers of modern art, attracting art pilgrims from all over the world. Minimalist giant (wait, is that an oxymoron?) Donald Judd, made his home here. The Chinati Foundation and the Judd Foundation preserve his home, studio, and many of his works of art displayed at the former Fort D.A.Russell. Galleries abound in Marfa. Strolling down the sparsely populated Marfa streets, one might stumble upon a New York bistro, and exhibition of Andy Warhol's Last Supper, a historic hotel, a lively conjunto concert in Spanish, a lonely tumbleweed, or a sidewalk that got rolled up before the sun went down. What is Marfa? All of the above. And less. And more. If you know what I mean. |
