Founded in 2007, the first festival was put on in 2008 and generated much fanfare, for many reasons. This is a locally owned and operated festival and they are usually looking for volunteers during festival weekend.

It's also now BYOB, which is perfect for bringing a killer bottle or two of Bordeaux from Spec's in Houston or Austin and eating and drinking well. I would recommend you call for a reservation, as their tables can fill up.

The unique wind patterns around here allow for excellent gliding; Marfa Gliders even hosts a nationally known Glideer Rally each April. Burt also plays drums and sings in one of our favorite local bands The Moondogs, who play at Padre's quite often.

lastminutelowbudget.com - Last Minute low Budget Productions out of Terlingua is an indie theater group that puts on acclaimed productions several times per year.
www.cochinealmarfa.com - The best desserts pretty much anywhere can be found here. Cochineal is a white tablecloth restaurant that serves high end food, Big Bend Coffee and has a wide selection of fine wines. Some of the produce comes from their own garden, which is located in a lot across their alleyway and is tended by co-owner Toshi and his helper Mr. T. They are open for breakfast many days and dinner nearly every day. Consult their website for details, as it sometimes changes. Oh yes, the architecture and design of their restored ancient adobe building will please fans fo Donald Judd. Reservations recommended.
www.chinatihotsprings.com - located 45 miles from Marfa (yet an hour and a quarter's drive) down FM 2810, this is a jewel and a treasure. Incredible springs and inexpensive accomodations in literally the middle of nowhere. Bring everything you need and a high-clearance vehicle. Then relax and enjoy.

Located behind the Terlingua Store, this cookoff is much more about chili and tequila and leaves out the pole dancing, omnipresent law enforcement and fistfights. Average age is up there, and therefore my personality fits in just fine. Great music and people, best chili!
www.marfaflyer.com - owned and operated by former City Councilman Scott May, the Marfa Flyer is a shuttle bus on demand that can pick you up and/or drop you off at regional airports or pretty much anywhere else. A great deal if you have 4 or more people and would rather sleep than drive to El Paso or Midland/Odessa. Definitely get a reservation as early as you know you'll want the ride.

www.cibolocreekranch.com - Located a half hour south of Marfa, this historic ranch and resort is an amazing place to be. It's not cheap, but in my opinion it's an amazing value if you love the serenity andbeauty of the Trans-Pecos. They are also willing to take groups in a van to Padre's following dinner in their excellent restaurant. They also have a full bar and 8 historic markers on the premises.
www.cdri.org - The Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute is dedicated towards the preservation, study and appreciation of the Chihuahuan Desert region. They have many programs, including classes to become a Texas Master Naturalist. Based in the Fort Davis area.
